Our relationship with the river has brightened since the alewives have returned.
The Town of Benton puts on a Alewife Festival which begins on a Friday evening in May with an Eating With Alewives Supper at the Grange. The lobstermen/harvesters bring lobster freshly fed with alewives which makes the feast more palatable to many. Alewives taste ok especially smoked but they are bony and slow to pick. It’s nice to see everyone having a good time. The next day we learn about some of the predators in the watershed and folks tour the dam with its lift.
On the Summer Solstice 2014 we paddled the river with fish and birds and friends guided by the people of Sebasticook Regional Land Trust.
